Grammar checking ESPN.com

Here’s one that had me scratching my head this morning:

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Thursday he expected the league’s competition committee would review the rule that possession could not change because the whistle blew during the offseason, as it has in the past.

Possession could not change because the whistle blew during the offseason? That sounds right. Not much should change when the whistle blows during the offseason. After all, there are no games being played and thus there is no possession that could change. Perhaps it’s a more philosophical/existential question. If a whistle blows during the offseason and there are no fans, coaches or players around to hear it, does it make a sound?
